Deadpool

A former Special Forces operative turned mercenary is subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopting the alter ego Deadpool.

I give a huge thumbs-up to the production team and studio for having the balls to make a rated R Super-Hero movie. This was everything that a Deadpool fan could want. Ryan Reynolds was born to play the wisecracking, fourth-wall breaking, ass kicking Wade Wilson, and is a fantastic redo for the character, after being wrecked by “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”.

I honestly can’t wait for Deadpool 2 (which has been given the green light). As with most first-time hero movies, we have to tell the character’s origin, which takes up quite a lot of screentime, Deadpool 2 will not have to do this, and we can get down to the sweet, sweet chimichanga of the story.

Should you take your kids to see this? fuck no. This is a rated R movie, and I mean hard-R.. full frontal nudity in the strip club scene.. lots of blood, and gore, sex.. even the use of a Strap On Dildo.. So sure, take the little tykes. What do I care.

So many fourth-wall references to keep an eye and ear out for..

  • Stan Lee as the strip-club DJ
  • Multiple references to and about other movies, such as
    • X-Men Origins: Wolverine, including having his mouth sewn shut.
    • Green Lantern, the green animated suit
    • Ryan Reynolds.. multiple jabs at, and swooning over himself..
    • Colossus talks about Professor X, and Deadpool asks “Which one? McAvoy or Stewart?” (The 2 actors who have portrayed Prof.X)

Although this could be the greatest Marvel movie of all time, I do have a few things of note.

  • Why is Colossus stuck in his metal form? I’m assuming it’s just due to budget constraints and not wanting to pay an actor for his “human” appearance. But, I could be wrong.
  • Negasonic Teenage Warhead was completely changed for this movie. In the Marvel Universe, she is a telepath with precognitive dreams. In this movie, she generates localized atomic explosions. Sure, it actually fits better with her name, but still.
  • Angel Dust (who I don’t remember ever being referred to by name in the movie)’s powers are supposed to be limited to brief periods of time.. and although very strong and resilient, I’m not sure she could have gone toe to toe with Colossus (or fist to fist)

So, there we have it, for now.. I plan on seeing this one again. It was good clean family fun.. no wait..
