Blair Witch (2016)

After discovering a video showing what he believes to be his sister’s experiences in the demonic woods of the Blair Witch, James and a group of friends head to the forest in search of his lost sibling.

I liked it!

I was a fan of The Blair Witch Project (1999), and if you liked this found footage movie, you’ll like this 2016 sequel. It truly captured the spirit and feeling of the first movie, only a bit more intense. Where the original kept you guessing up to the end, there is definitely a supernatural force at work in the Dark Woods outside of Burketsville.

Upgrading the technology, we’ve traded hand held camcorders for ear-worn digital recorders, and drones. But with all their tech and GPS locators, there is no escape from the dark spirit of the forest.

The sound director did a great job. The snapping of twigs and branches were heard all around the theater, bringing up the level of suspense and anxiety to levels that I hadn’t felt in an american film in some time. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoyed the 1999 original.

Spoiler Alert

The sounds we heard where big.. and I mean like, I was almost expecting to see an Ent from the Lord of the Rings wandering about.. or, I dare say that I was hoping to see my favorite “monster”, the Windego. But, it was not to be.

This time around, we actually get a glimpse of the Blair Witch, for just moments before she ducks out of view behind a tree, or the camera turns away from her. You never get a good look, and that’s a good thing! Far too often, we get too much and nothing is left to the imagination. Blair Witch leaves me wanting more, to be honest.

This one is definitely going in my digital collection on its release.
