An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is called upon to save the existence of humanity from being negated by two renegade angels trying to exploit a loop-hole and reenter Heaven.
I love this movie. The humor is right up my alley, and I just love the fact irony (yes, real irony) that Alanis Morrisette is silent in her portrayal of God (Get it? she’s a singer, and has no dialog).
Dogma take a comedic view of the hypocrisy of religion, but in a way that makes you think, and actually offers up suggestions on how to fix things. All wrapped up in a quest to prevent all of existence from being undone.
Now, I realize that this movie was made in the 90’s and it may actually be pretty obvious to some, but there are a few references to Neil Gaiman story lines from various comics. Such as; a deity taking an annual sabbatical (Death, the High Cost of Living), Angel removing their wings to become human (Sandman: Season of Mists), Deity being kidnapped in the mortal world (Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes), etc.. Not that I’m complaining, I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed the performances by everyone involved, especially Kevin Smith as Silent Bob. That being said, it’s not great for the youngsters, due to a high amount of crude sexual humor, and it gets a little bloody at the end.
