With the disappearance of hack horror writer Sutter Cane, all Hell is breaking loose…literally! Author Cane, it seems, has a knack for description that really brings his evil creepy-crawlies to life. Insurance investigator John Trent is sent to investigate Cane’s mysterious vanishing act and ends up in the sleepy little East Coast town of Hobb’s End. The fact that this town exists as a figment of Cane’s twisted imagination is only the beginning of Trent’s problems.
One of the most celebrated horror writers of all time was H.P. Lovecraft. Fans of his works have been waiting, and waiting, for a movie to be brought to the cinema, that would actually not suck. This is one of the closest attempts I’ve seen. Though not an actual Lovecraft story, In the Mouth of Madness is written in a similar style, and pays tribute to Lovecraft around every turn.
Sam Neil is a fine actor in his own right, and this is the 1st of 2 lovecraftian movies he’s been in.. the 2nd being Event Horizon. For what it was, this movie is good on its own, and though a little cliche in a few places, I would recommend viewing for any horror fan.
