The Addams Family (2019)

The eccentrically macabre family moves to a bland suburb where Wednesday Addams’ friendship with the daughter of a hostile and conformist local reality show host exacerbates conflict between the families.

I had very low expectations of this new animated feature of our beloved Addams Family – and although I was not thrilled with the finale product, I have to admit that I didn’t hate it. After all, this feature had to contend with the 1990’s film adaptations, and that’s no small task.

I had little issue with the family, itself. I believe Oscar Issacs did a fantastic job voicing Gomez.. honestly, there were times where I thought I was listening to Raul Julia. Even Snoop Dogg as “It” reminded me of the original 60’s TV show.

Really, the only issue I had with characters.. as did a lot of people speaking up about this feature.. is every character other than the Addams’s. The townsfolk are rather bland, and our antagonist, Margaux (voiced by Allison Janney) is a one trick pony, with hair that would make Donald Trump look stylish (admittedly, I believe they used an exaggerated “trump” hairdo on her).

Unlike most of its predecessors, this animated feature is clearly marketed to kids, and I’m honestly shocked that Nickelodeon didn’t have anything to do with it.

So, as I said in the beginning.. I don’t hate it. But, this is a “bubble gum pop” Addams’ Family.
