On the night of her wedding, Justine is struggling to be happy even though it should be the happiest day of her life. It was an extravagant wedding paid for by her sister and brother-in-law who are trying to keep the bride and all the guests in line. Meanwhile, Melancholia, a blue planet, is hurtling towards the Earth. Claire, Justine’s sister, is struggling to maintain composure with fear of the impending disaster.
Throughout this entire movie, I honestly wanted to slap the shit out of Kirsten Dunst. Her character sabotages her wedding, showing up 2 hours late, has sex with someone she doesn’t even know (yes, during her reception), makes all of the bad decisions, time and time again. Was she nuts? was she a bitch? I just couldn’t…
This is a movie about crippling depression. Hence the title of the film; Melancholia.
I won’t lie, this film isn’t for everyone. It’s long and really drawn out at a painfully slow pace. However, it’s very well done. The only reason I didn’t give it higher marks, is that my scale is based on re-watch-ability.. and I really don’t think I could sit through it again.
