Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilising a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I’ll start by saying, I’ve never read a single Dr Strange comic. There, that’s out of the way.
I liked it! To be honest, I was fully expecting nothing more than a CGFX extravaganza with no substance, but I was only half right. Yes, the movie relies heavily on mind blowing visuals, but there is a good story there… is it actually Dr Strange’s origin? I dont know, I didnt read the comic… But I liked it, and it’s definitely being added to my collection.
The biggest controversy in the making of this film is Tilda Swinton being cast as “The Ancient One”, a role that some feel should have gone to an Asian actor, instead of a Caucasian woman. To that, I say: she kicked ass. The film’s cast is 90% asian. The Marvel Universe movies have done a fairly good job in diversifying roles when bringing these stories to the big screen. And that’s all I’m going to say on the subject. She was perfect for the role, did an excellent job.
Make sure to stay to the lights come up. There is a mid-credit and after-credit scene.
