I’d like to think that I’ve seen it all. I spent a life time watching every horror movie I could find. I specially found myself interested in horror genres that are at the fringe of what society would stand for.. Cannibal Holocaust, Martyrs, Salo, Hostel, Human Centipede, and many others that had been rated X (NC17) for graphic horror.
But tonight, I watched perhaps the most disturbing movie of my life. I have heard tales of “A Serbian Film” for a few years now. How it one of those films that, quite honestly, is illegal to view in some countries. And I can see why.
Scott Weinberg (reviewer for SXSW and Fear.net) wrote:
“I think the film is tragic, sickening, disturbing, twisted, absurd, infuriated, and actually quite intelligent. There are those who will be unable (or unwilling) to decipher even the most basic of ‘messages’ buried within A Serbian Film, but I believe it’s one of the most legitimately fascinating films I’ve ever seen. I admire and detest it at the same time. And I will never watch it again. Ever.”
I agree with this statements.
Milos is an aging porn star. Years retired, he is recruited to perform in a sexual “art” piece which will pay so handsomely that he and his new family would not have to worry about money for as long as he lives. He agrees, only to find himself working under bizarre conditions and in scenes that make him very uncomfortable. Drugged and under the influence of a powerful aphrodisiac The project evolves, or devolves, in to snuff, necrophilia.. and.. umm.. worse.
The film brought out real emotion, and I wanted to sit here and tell you all that it was the worst piece of shit I’ve ever seen.. but, alas, if I’m to be truthful, I can’t do that. This was meant to be a shocking display of the absolute worst in people. If you’ve seen 8mm with Nic Cage, this one isn’t far off from the imagery and content.. but just worse. And if it were a bad film, I would not have had any feeling for the protagonist, who was drugged, and not in his right mind.
So, in a way, I have to give applause for the project as a whole… but, I will never watch this movie again. And I really can’t recommend this one for any of my friends.
You’ve been warned.
