THE VATICAN TAPES follows the ultimate battle between good and evil – God versus Satan. Angela Holmes is an ordinary 27-year-old until she begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury and death. Holmes is examined and possession is suspected, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be an ancient satanic force more powerful than ever imagined. It’s all up to Father Lozano to wage war for more than just Angela’s soul, but for the world as we know it.
I had heard some mixed reviews of The Vatican Tapes, and after viewing, I can see the good and the bad. While there was nothing really inherently wrong with the movie, itself, the real issue is that it’s all been done before.
Possession / Exorcism movies are a dime a dozen, and although film makers try to give their vision a unique twist in some way.. it always fails because every exorcism movie is the same. Someone gets possessed, treat for mental illness, call a priest.. some times it works, some times it doesn’t. But, there is no way to ever put such a story together to make it stand out as a “Great Movie”. If you’ve seen one exorcism movie.. you’ve seen them all.
Such is The Vatican Tapes. Good acting, good effects, but not a unique story.
Stick to the best. Go with The Exorcist.
