Goodnight Mommy

In the heat of the summer, a lonesome house in the countryside between woods and corn fields, lives nine-year-old twin brothers who are waiting for their mother. When she comes home, bandaged after cosmetic surgery, nothing is like before. The children start to doubt that this woman is actually their mother. It emerges an existential struggle for identity and fundamental trust.

Goodnight Mommy starts off very slow. That might be a turn off for the average viewer, especially considering that it’s in German with English Subtitles. The slow build up can be perceived as tedious, but is well worth the wait as the events unfold, in a twist ending that I didn’t see coming, and really took me by surprise. So if you can hang in there, there is a pay off at the end.. and honestly, some of it is a little hard to watch.
